Sociedade em Colapso

James Buchan diz no Daily Telegraph o que a restante imprensa se parece ter esquecido. O colapso da instituições e da sociedade iraquiano não é culpa do americanos mas sim do regime do partido Baath.

The truth is that Iraqi society had long ago lost its bearings. Thirty-five years of suffocating rule by the Arab Ba'ath Socialist Party, almost 10 years of war against Iran and then Kuwait and its Western and Arab allies, another decade of sanctions and then the terror and violence of the United States advance up the Euphrates have knocked Iraqi society off kilter. The Ba'ath infiltrated every corner of Iraqi life, controlling its institutions, distributing its economic benefits, restricting speech and thought. Its disappearance has left a void in the Iraqi personality. Even middle-class Iraqis have shed their civil inhibitions in a scramble of everybody for himself or herself
