EU wins in steel case with US

The US could be faced with huge sanctions following a World Trade Organisation (WTO) ruling on Monday that Washington's tariffs on steel imports were illegal.

The WTO's announcement is a victory for the EU and puts fresh pressure on the Bush administration to withdraw the tariffs.

(...)

The EU brought the case to the WTO along with Japan, South Korea, China, Switzerland, Norway, New Zealand and Brazil.

A joint statement published yesterday (10 November) says that the ruling "leaves the US with no other choice but to terminate its WTO-incompatible safeguard measures without delay".

The row goes back to January last year when the US imposed tariffs of up to 30% on steel imports in an effort to protect US producers from tough foreign competition
