EU ponders populist trade policies

Trade Commissioner Pascal Lamy is said to be pondering plans which could see governments able to veto imports which do not meet individual societies' "collective preferences".

The move would allow the EU to veto, for example, the import of GM crops, which appear to be deeply unpopular throughout most of Europe, but which the EU theoretically must import, if safe, under WTO rules.


Acho que o título diz tudo sobre a natureza desta proposta.

Resta saber porque é que a autorização/proibição de um produto estão dependentes de sondagens e/ou manifestações ruidosas. Resta saber porque é que as preferências de certos grupos de consumidores têm de condicionar as da restantes população.
